CASE STUDY STEED AND EVANS LIMITED Steed and Evans provides integrated heavy civil engineering, infrastructure, and aggregate services throughout southern Ontario. After replacing an in-house system with B2W Estimate, the company added the complementary B2W Track element to achieve highly unified estimating, bidding and field tracking processes. Challenges As a growing enterprise providing diverse services, Steed and Evans ran into limitations with a spreadsheet based estimating system developed in house. "We needed a more sophisticated and powerful alternative that could give our estimators a standard template and common resources," explains, chief estimator Gerhard Ens. "We looked at another software supplier, but B2W impressed us with their features, personal touch and responsiveness to our specific requirements," Ens adds. "They promised to support the product, which they have always done, and we never looked back." On the contrary, Steed and Evans kept moving ahead with B2W. Adding the Track element following Estimate to enhance its field tracking and analysis capabilities while linking them directly to its estimating function. The company previously relied on its own Visual Basic program for field tracking and experimented briefly with Timberline before adopting the B2W solution. "Track was the next logical step," construction accounting supervisor Alex Kalmar says. "The way Estimate and Track mesh is a huge plus, and the export/import functions save time and greatly reduce the possibility of keying errors."
