USE OF MANUAL METHODS BY
CONTRACTORS TO MEASURE PROGRESS
Contractors were asked how frequently they use
manual means of measuring project progress, such
as spreadsheets, databases or homegrown systems.
Their responses reveal that nearly all contractors (93%)
still rely on these manual methods to some degree, and
that the majority (63%) do so on more than half of their
projects.
Owners were asked how frequently they believe
contractors engage in these activities, and all of the
owners believe that contractors are still relying to some
degree on manual methods for measuring progress, with
nearly three quarters (73%) believing that contractors do
so on more than half of projects.
RISKS RELATED TO MANUAL PROGRESS MEASUREMENT
These manual methods can create challenges, such as
slowing the process of measuring progress (and thus the
ability for contractors to be paid), inconsistent reporting to
an owner from different contractors and increased risk of
inaccurate information.
