CASE STUDY PACE CONSTRUCTION The managers/estimators at Pace Construction had previously been using Hard Dollar (now InEight) to estimate and bid their jobs. According to Phil Hocher, president, they were unsatisfied with the system for a number of reasons, prompting a switch to B2W Estimate. Pace is based in St. Louis and has provided Missouri's eastern half with heavy highway, bridge, and asphalt services since the 1940s. "Basically, it was overkill," Hocher says in describing the previous estimating solution. "There were a lot of extraneous packages in there that we just didn't need, and features like custom reports, which we did need, weren't included." He adds that, although Hard Dollar listened to the suggestions of its users, the actual implementation of those ideas was slow to come, if at all. Managers/estimators at Pace were also troubled by the fact that there was no way to access information if they decided to switch to another estimating system. Pace embarked on an estimating software evaluation that included both B2W Estimate and HCSS. Immediately, the difference was clear, according to Hocher. "We liked that B2W Estimate was Windows-based and easy to navigate," he says. "We were also drawn to the fact that custom reports were included in the package." For Pace, the other major advantages of B2W Estimate include its ability to communicate with EBS in one simple, timesaving process, and the ease with which users can download to Viewpoint. Among other favorite features is the ability to add conditions to a job, which Hocher says comes in handy day in and day out. • Headquarters: St. Louis, Missouri • Work Types: Road Construction, Bridge Construction, Paving, Materials • Elements: Estimate • Client Since: 2000 • B2W User Conferences: 4 Formerly...
