465 The major benefit to closely adhering to the equipment PM Maintenance Schedule is the increase in equipment utilization. Taking a proactive approach to maintenance reduces the amount of breakdowns in the field. Keeping a close eye on the overall percentage of PM work versus unplanned work is a major KPI (key performance indicator). Planned work should account for 75% to 90% of overall maintenance, with some world-class companies reaching as high as 98%. One key to reaching such a high level is the use of equipment inspections. Requiring inspections on all your equipment in your fleet on a consistent basis will allow a company to move to a proactive approach. The more constant feedback a company can get on its fleet, the more predictable it becomes. Coupling this with a well thought out, rigid preventive maintenance process will turn huge dividends over time. This could reach into millions of dollars saved each year.
