“Equipping our excavator with the Trimble LOADRITE X2350 weighing system optimizes the economics of earthworks excavating. Now the trucks are loaded exactly with the optimal weight.” says machine operator Søren Kristensen to Søren Birn, the local SIT...
Per Aarsleff A/S recently won a construction contract in Hasselager near Aarhus, Denmark they are working on for its new 12,000 square metre headquarters, which will be ready by the end of 2016. Before building can begin, 45,000 cubic meters (58,500 tons) of earth and clay (1.3 average density) must be excavated and removed from site. Søren Kristensen in his 36 ton Cat 336D excavator is able to remove approximately 2,500 cubic meters each day, with trucks carrying between 30 to 39 tons each.
The removal of the material is included in the contract, with payments against fixed targets so it is important for profitability to control costs making sure that the trucks do not run under-loaded.
Chairman Casper Gram from Per Aarsleff A/S estimates that the trucks often ran underloaded by around 1 ton. Therefore for the Hasselager project: 58 500 tonnes of soil, requires 1,671 truckloads at an average of 35 tonnes each. But if 1,671 trucks are each underloaded by 1 ton, this is equivalent to 1,671 tonnes of soil or 47 truckloads. These 47 truckloads could be saved by tracking payload weights during loading.
Effective Weighing System
Having the Trimble LOADRITE X2350 weighing system installed by SITECH Danmark in Horsens has ensured that underloading is prevented and Aarsleff is realizing the savings.
Now Søren can load with precision and honk when the truck has reached its maximum load. The weighing system keeps track of material moved quantities and the precise loads have also given Søren the reputation of being a master excavator operator.
“The weighing system works well. Now run the trucks are no longer underloaded, and we also can ensure that the trucks are not running overloaded, says Søren Kristensen.
The Right Way
Casper Gram predicts that the new technology will be important in his workflow and cost savings, “The weighing system is the right way to do it in terms of project economics, truck driving safety, fuel consumption and road traffic”, says Casper Gram.
The Trimble LOADRITE X2350 weighing system can be connected to a Material Management System, so that the operator can send data on operational activities directly from machine to office for reporting and analysis.
Variations in materials density from clay to earth make it difficult to estimate payload.
